Why I switched to Non-Toxic products

Are There Toxic Ingredients Hiding In Your Everyday Products?

I'd love to dive into why I switched to non toxic products, what to look out for, and my favorite swaps to substitute conventional products with organic, healthy alternatives.

Let's back up a little first....

Rewind to just a couple of years ago, here's a look at the products I often used.

Bath & Body Works (lotions, perfumes, candles!) L'Oreal and Pantene shampoo, Dove and Secret deodorant, Cover Girl and MAC makeup, Neutrogena and St Ivy's Cleansers, Febreze air freshner… these are common conventional products I used to use all the time, and are commonly used by so many people.

You might be thinking, these are brands I use all the time, is that a problem? Or perhaps your reaction is, woahhh girlll you used those products?! Either way, It's never too ate to make a change!

Let's dive deeper to explore why I no longer use these products. If you're feeling overwhelmed about what to use instead, don't worry, I will cover that! We'll get to my favorite part-the healthy, non-toxic, quality, effective products to swap in.

If you're anything like me, when I needed a toiletry or beauty item, I used to just pop to a drug store or Target, and grabbed either a popular, known, “good brand

name”, or grabbed what sounded best, looked the nicest aesthetically, or had the lowest price.

I didn’t think twice about the ingredients in any of these products, I just bought whatever product piqued my interest and claimed to address what I was looking for such as “Clear Skin”, “No more frizz”, a nice scented lotion or deodorant... I never considered that any of these products would be unsafe or harmful to my health. (If they're sold in stores, how can they be bad for us, right? ;) )

Then came my skin journey. Along with my painful periods journey. Long story short, I learned that the ingredients in our food, in our products, and in our environment have a huge effect on our health. Long term and short term. My eyes were opened to the sad truth that the commonly used, “well regarded” brands, are often full of toxic chemicals and unregulated ingredients that have been found to be endocrine disruptors (such as disrupting reproductive hormones, and thyroid function), carcinogenic, and can be linked to birth defects, menstrual and fertility issues, allergies, metabolic issues.... Pretty crazy right?!

When we use toxic ingredients, lets say for our skin or on our skin, they don’t just go on, do their thing, and wash off. They are absorbed into our bloodstream. When we use toxic cleaning products air fresheners, or candles, we inhale those chemicals. A toxic load can impact the gut, liver, kidneys, hormones, and more, therefore impact our organs and body systems from doing their job properly. This often leads to skin issues, gut imbalance/digestive issues, hormone imbalances, chronic disease.... (and often a combination since our body is interconnected!)

Here is a quick list of some toxins and their dangers.
  • Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.

  • Paraformaldehyde, a type of formaldehyde.

  • Methylene glycol, a type of formaldehyde.

  • Quaternium 15, which releases formaldehyde.

  • Mercury, which can damage the kidneys and nervous system.

  • Dibutyl and diethylhexyl phthalates, which disrupt hormones and damage the reproductive system.

  • Isobutyl and isopropyl parabens, which disrupt hormones and harm the reproductive system.

  • The long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS, which have been linked to cancer.

  • M- and o-phenylenediamine, used in hair dyes, which irritate and sensitize the skin, damage DNA and can cause cancer.

Unfortunately toxic ingredients have leeched their way into most of conventional products. The good news is nowadays there are so many safer, better options. I'd so much rather opt for those healthier, non toxic options rather than taking the risk with these toxic products, and reduce my toxin load so that my body can do what it needs to.

Now for the practical part:

Which products should ideally be swapped? Skincare products, nail polish, air fresheners, soap, hair products, body lotions, feminine hygiene products, household cleaning products, scented candles, and perfume are important to be cautious about.

I know, it's wild that the industry isn't more regulated and that there are dangerous ingredients in majority of conventional products, even popular brands (and even "dermatology approved" or physician recommended" brands! Those labels are a total scam and mean nothing, fyi). If you won't drop dead after using their product, it's deemed as "Safe". Sadly for many companies it's all about making the most money and using the cheapest ingredients- and then marketing the product in a sexy way.

This likely sounds overwhelming. but don’t worry! You don’t need to go cold turkey. You can slowly switch over as you finish your current products.

Now, for my favorite part: Below are my Fave brands and products with nourishing, good for you, quality, ingredients (rather than cheap, synthetic, carcinogenetic irritants).

It took some trial and error to find what I liked. I created a list of my favorites, to help you navigate the process. If you've already made the switch, here are some new recs to add to your already non-toxic lifestyle.

You can also visit The Beauty Shift Shop to see all my favorite non toxic shops and products I use and love. I ONLY share brands/products I have used and genuinely love, and all has been vetted by me :)

My Favorite Non- Toxic Swaps:

For Soap and Bath Salts:

I love the brand Whispering Willow.

It's a Small business that has a beautiful array of hand soaps, bar soaps, bath salts, lip balm… beautifully packaged with glass containers AND 10% goes to charity.

Are you a detox bath loving girl too? Love that it's relaxing AND supportive for the immune, lymphatic, and detoxification system. I've been using this one (bulk size bath salt) from Amazon too!

Makeup and Beauty:

These beauty shops are curated with non-toxic brands.

Skincare!

I will definitely write a separate blog with more details for skincare (acne, aging, masks, specific product recs...), but my favorite skincare brands include:

(My faves of those are Primally Pure and Cleo and Coco!)

Hair Products:

Rahua, Under Luna, InnerSense, 100% Pure , and Grown Alchemist are great clean brands that can all be found at Safe & Chic,

Living Libations is another good one (with nourishing hair oil, shampoo & conditioner).

Other:

Take a deep breath, remember you don’t have to change everything overnight. When your old product is done, you can then order a cleaner option, taking it one step at a time.

If you have questions about products, shops, or this topic, I’d love to connect with you more!

You can contact me from the website or message me on Instagram @thebeautyshiftco.

I hope this helps you find some new non-toxic favorites!

Feel free to let me know if it was helpful for you or if we share any of the same favorites!

Daniella
